THE RASTRO, BUT TAKE THE ALTERNATIVE ROUTE

El Rastro is historic, and you shouldn't skip it, but there's no need to get stuck in the sea of cheap T-shirts and scratched vinyl. Enter via Calle del Carnero or Mira el Río Baja, where the antique stalls, second-hand books, and prints are quieter and full of hidden treasures.

When hunger strikes, head to Bar Santurce (Plaza General Vara del Rey) for grilled sardines with vermouth. Fair warning: you can smell the fish three streets away, but it tastes divine.

It's peaceful, with benches, iron lampposts, huge trees, and no crowds. Perfect for eating on the grass and staying to watch the sun set without a horde of tourists in the way.

CLASSIC CINEMA IN ORIGINAL VERSION

If you're not up for much walking but want a cultural plan: Cine Doré. The Filmoteca Española (Calle Santa Isabel, 3) screens classic films, restored rarities, and auteur gems on Sundays, all in their original version and in a modernist theatre that feels like stepping back in time.
