The Puerta de Alcalá is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable landmarks in Madrid, Spain. This grand triumphal arch is located in the Plaza de la Independencia, near Parque del Retiro (Retiro Park), and stands as a historical and architectural symbol of the city.

The Puerta de Alcalá was inaugurated in 1778 by order of King Carlos III as part of a project to modernise Madrid. It was built as one of the city gates on what was once the old road to Alcalá de Henares.

Its neoclassical style makes it a prominent architectural feature, designed by the architect Francesco Sabatini.

Central and accessible location:

It is very close to other key tourist spots such as Parque del Retiro, Puerta del Sol, and Plaza de Cibeles, making it easy to include in a walking tour.

The Puerta de Alcalá is situated in one of Madrid's busiest areas, surrounded by major avenues and streets like Calle de Alcalá and Paseo de Recoletos.

The Puerta de Alcalá is a highly photogenic spot, and it’s common for visitors to take pictures with it as a backdrop, especially at night when it is beautifully lit.
