The Kilometre Zero of Madrid, Spain
The Kilometre Zero plaque in Madrid is located in Puerta del Sol, right in front of the Real Casa de Correos. It marks the starting point of Spain's radial roads.
The Kilometre Zero plaque in Madrid is located in Puerta del Sol, right in front of the Real Casa de Correos (Royal Post Office).
It is one of the most visited tourist spots.
This plaque is significant as it marks the point from which all distances on Spain's radial roads are measured. Made of bronze and granite, it bears the inscription 'Origen de las Carreteras Radiales' ('Origin of the Radial Roads'). This spot also symbolises the geographical centre of Madrid and, symbolically, of Spain.
The current plaque, installed in 2009, is a renovated version of the original from 1950. It is a popular spot for both tourists and locals, who often take photos standing on or pointing at the plaque.
Walking from Gran Vía to Puerta del Sol takes about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your pace. The route is short and quite straightforward.
If you prefer to take the metro:
From Gran Vía station to Sol (one stop on Line 1), the journey takes about 3 minutes. Including waiting time and getting around inside the stations, the total is roughly 7-10 minutes.
Both options are quick, but if you enjoy walking, it’s a pleasant stroll through central Madrid.
The Kilometre Zero in Puerta del Sol is an iconic and symbolic spot, but it is not a monumental tourist attraction in itself.
