The history of Calle del Pez
Calle del Pez in Malasaña has transformed over centuries, from a legendary origin to a cultural hub. Discover its fascinating evolution.
Calle del Pez, a key street in the Malasaña neighbourhood, has witnessed centuries of transformation. From its legendary origins to becoming a cultural hub, its history is as rich as it is varied. However, few know that the building now home to Adventure Hostel Madrid has a fascinating past: before becoming a modern hostel, it was a convent.
Join us as we explore the evolution that connects the past and present of this emblematic corner of Madrid.
Calle del Pez owes its name to an old 17th-century legend. According to the story, a young man repeatedly dreamt of a fish in an underground stream. When he found it, the discovery was considered miraculous, and the street's name was immortalised.
In its early centuries, Calle del Pez was mainly home to merchants' residences and small taverns. However, its character changed in the 19th century when a convent was built in the building now occupied by Adventure Hostel Madrid. This convent was a haven of peace amidst the neighbourhood's bustle, where the sisters dedicated their days to prayer and community service. For decades, the convent became a spiritual pillar for the residents of Malasaña.
The 20th century: From convent to part of Madrid’s bohemian life
With the arrival of the 20th century, Madrid's social and cultural changes left their mark on Calle del Pez. The Malasaña neighbourhood became a bohemian space, where artists, writers, and musicians turned the area into a hub of creativity. Although the convent remained active for part of this time, its surroundings filled with bars, cafés, and venues that symbolised cultural rebellion.
In the 1980s, during the rise of the Movida Madrileña (Madrid's countercultural movement), the neighbourhood experienced a cultural explosion. During this period, the convent building was closed, and its future became a subject of speculation. However, its imposing structure and location on Calle del Pez ensured it would find a new purpose.
In June 2024, the historic building of the former convent opened its doors as Adventure Hostel Madrid, marking the beginning of a new chapter. With a renovation that respects its original architecture, the hostel combines the historic charm of the building with a modern and welcoming design.
