Chamberí Sound wraps up today with a free surprise concert in the square

Today marks the final day of the Chamberí Sound festival, ending with a free surprise concert at Plaza de Chamberí. If you're in Malasaña, it's an easy trip and a plan worth checking out.

What is Chamberí Sound and why is it special?

Chamberí Sound is a neighbourhood festival that mixes music, art, and culture. For a few days, they've been running free concerts, exhibitions, and workshops all over the area. This year, they've focused on up-and-coming bands, so you get solid live music without spending a euro. It's a good plan.

The festival also highlights the local culture of Chamberí, a neighbourhood known for its blend of traditional charm and modern vibes. Beyond the music, the event includes pop-up food stalls featuring local delicacies, craft markets, and even street performances. It’s a celebration of the community, making it a unique experience for both locals and visitors.

Chamberí Sound is also committed to sustainability. This year, they’ve partnered with local environmental groups to ensure the festival leaves a minimal ecological footprint. Recycling stations are set up throughout the area, and many of the food vendors use biodegradable packaging. It’s a festival that not only entertains but also cares about its impact.

Additionally, the festival has collaborated with local artists to create temporary art installations around the neighbourhood. These installations reflect the spirit of Chamberí, blending urban and traditional themes. Visitors can enjoy these artworks while exploring the area, adding another layer of cultural enrichment to the event.

Where and when is the surprise concert?

The concert is tonight, October 29th, at Plaza de Chamberí. The music starts at 9:00 PM and ends around 11:30 PM. The band is a surprise, but word is it's a known Spanish indie group. It's free and there's no booking required. Just show up. We'd get there a bit early to grab a decent spot.

Plaza de Chamberí is an open-air venue, so make sure to dress warmly as the evenings in late October can get chilly. If you’re planning to stay for the entire concert, consider bringing a light blanket or a portable chair for added comfort. The plaza itself is surrounded by charming cafes and bars, so you can grab a hot drink or a quick snack before the show.

For those driving, there are several parking garages nearby, such as Parking Garaje Reim and Parking Espronceda, both within a 10-minute walk from the plaza. However, public transport is highly recommended due to potential traffic and limited parking spaces.

If you’re looking for a pre-concert dinner, nearby restaurants like Taberna de Chamberí offer traditional Spanish dishes with a modern twist. Their menu includes options like croquetas, Iberian ham, and seafood paella, making it a great spot to fuel up before the music begins.

How to get there from Malasaña?

From our front door on Calle del Pez, you have three solid options to get to Plaza de Chamberí. 1. Walk: It's a 20-minute straight shot up Fuencarral. 2. Metro: Grab Line 1 at Tribunal (a 5-min walk from us) and get off at Iglesia. Total time is about 15 minutes. 3. Bus: The 149 gets you there in roughly the same time. Easy.

If you’re cycling, Madrid’s public bike-sharing service, BiciMAD, has stations in both Malasaña and Chamberí. You can pick up a bike near Calle del Pez and drop it off at the station near Plaza de Chamberí. It’s an eco-friendly and fun way to travel, taking about 15 minutes.

For those unfamiliar with the area, the metro is the most straightforward option. Line 1 runs frequently, and Iglesia station is just a 3-minute walk from the plaza. If you’re traveling late, keep in mind that the metro operates until 1:30 AM, giving you plenty of time to return to Malasaña after the concert.

Alternatively, taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Cabify are widely available in Madrid. A ride from Malasaña to Chamberí typically costs around €8-€12, depending on traffic. This option is particularly convenient if you’re traveling with a group or carrying heavy items.

What else to do in Chamberí before the concert?

If you get there early, Chamberí has plenty to do. For art, the Sorolla Museum is a 10-minute walk from the plaza and closes at 8:00 PM. For food and drinks, head to Calle Ponzano for its tapas bars, but be warned, it gets packed. If you want something quieter, Santander Park is nearby, or you can browse the small bookshops scattered around the area.

Another option is to visit the Andén 0 Chamberí, an old metro station turned museum that offers a glimpse into Madrid’s transport history. It’s free to enter and located just a 5-minute walk from the plaza. The station’s vintage decor and historical exhibits make it a unique stop.

For coffee lovers, Café Comercial, one of Madrid’s oldest cafes, is a must-visit. Located near Glorieta de Bilbao, it’s a short walk from Plaza de Chamberí. The cafe serves excellent coffee and traditional Spanish pastries, making it a perfect pre-concert stop.

If you’re interested in architecture, take a stroll around the neighbourhood to admire its historic buildings. Chamberí is home to several stunning examples of early 20th-century architecture, including the Church of Santa Teresa and San José, which features intricate details and a beautiful facade.

Is this a good plan for groups?

Yes, it’s a solid plan for groups. Guests ask us this almost daily at reception. Free outdoor concerts are always a good bet, and Plaza de Chamberí is big enough to find a spot for everyone. If you're here with your crew, it's a great, low-cost way to spend an evening.

For larger groups, consider arriving early to secure a good spot. The plaza can get crowded, especially for free events. Bringing a picnic blanket or folding chairs can make the experience more comfortable for everyone. After the concert, you can head to Calle Ponzano for a group dinner or drinks, as many of the bars and restaurants there are group-friendly.

If you’re traveling with kids, the open-air setting of the concert makes it a family-friendly event. There’s enough space for children to move around, and the lively atmosphere is sure to keep them entertained. Just remember to bring some snacks and drinks to keep everyone happy.

For those looking to extend the evening, some bars in Chamberí stay open late, offering live music or DJ sets. Check out Sala Clamores, a popular venue known for its jazz and indie performances. It’s a short walk from the plaza and a great way to keep the night alive.
